Greetings to all my lovely friends out there reading this, and a Happy Easter to you all! This year the holiday is somewhat low key in my household, but I at least wanted to show off a few new acquisitions:

(1) an vase that appropriately resembles a dyed Easter egg (filled with blossoming forsythias)

(2) a cheerful wreath for my feathered friends

(3) a thrifted mug stamped with a reminder of nature's beautyHausfrauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12744212518976378597noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1767771733979107650.post-74219065029426235372014-11-13T15:12:00.001-05:002014-11-13T15:12:14.842-05:00Getting my bobbins in order
Fall is a time of rich colors and of preparation for the winter.

In the spirit of both, I recently reorganized my sewing supplies. There's something satisfying about seeing a jumble of colors slowly transform into an orderly rainbow.

As they say, joy shared is joy multiplied, so enjoy these snapshots from my project.

During a trip to Salzburg in the summer of 2012, I acquired a taste for an Austrian delicacy known as Käferbohnensalat: boiled scarlet runner beans with fresh onion served with a dressing made of salt, pepper, apple cider vinegar, and oil made from the the seeds of naked-seeded pumpkins (Kürbiskernöl). What a treat!

While Austrians may call these delicious legumes Käferbohnen (literally "beetle beans"), Germans call them either Feuerbohnen ("fire beans") or bunte Riesenbohnen ("colorful giant beans"). The Latin name is Phaseolus coccineus.

The English term, scarlet runner bean, describes both the unforgettable color of the blossoms—favored by hummingbirds—and the plant's penchant for climbing up high.

For recipes that call for scarlet runner beans, this ingredient can't be
easily replaced by other varieties as the flavorful beans themselves
impart a unique taste of chestnut to whatever dish they're added to.
Unfortunately, though, these beans are hard to get in large quantities in the United States.
Most are sold in small packages for planting but in Germany and Austria
they're plentiful. My last time in Germany I brought back some packages of dried beans bought
at a Reformhaus and an organic grocery store (Bioladen).

Austrian purists swear by the pre-cooked canned variety, but by soaking the dried beans for a full day and cooking them with a little salt in a pressure cooker, you can achieve an even more delicious result.

You can eliminate some of the complex sugars with…um…odor-producing effects by such a long soak and changing the water afterwards. The Austrians may be famous for their music, but let's make sure it's for the likes of Mozart and Haydn.
This summer I decided to grow some myself. The beans came from Thomas Jefferson's estate Monticello. (Check out their fantastic seed options while you're there). The picture at the top of this post shows the fantastic variation in colors that the beans go through as they mature.

Next time you or someone you know decides to grow scarlet runner beans, remember that these plants aren't only valuable as ornaments but also offer a delectable fall treat!Hausfrauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12744212518976378597noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1767771733979107650.post-30719145360648586312014-04-19T20:05:00.001-04:002014-04-19T20:05:43.835-04:00Easter is better with miniature eggs...

Happy Easter, everybody!

I've been enjoying the lovely spring weather, especially the fresh breezes and bright sunshine.

Traditionally my family would dye eggs the day before Easter Sunday. Today I introduced a little twist to the usual by dying the tiny eggs my birds laid over the past year. What do you think?

Ever wanted to eat a candy bar for breakfast? Here's the next best thing: healthy morning müesli inspired by Almond Joy or Bounty candy bars. Kickstart your day with a cereal bursting with whole grains and flavor!

(1) Start with a good müesli basis. I like Bob's Red Mill, but you can make one yourself by combining rolled oats, raisins, flax seed, and sunflower seed.

(2) Add almonds (sliced, halved, whole...), coconut flakes, and chocolate chips to taste.

(3) Add milk. You can make this vegan by using a plant milk (soy, almond, flax, hemp, oat, etc.) and vegan chocolate chips.

(4) Enjoy!

When the temperature drops I instinctively gravitate towards household appliances that create warmth, like my oven, slow cooker, and—of course—hair dryer.

I do my hair regularly with wet sets to get a nice head of curls in the early evening. My hair is dry by the morning, but a few minutes of blow drying using a soft bonnet dryer makes the curls last even longer.

Except for us retro gals, most women are shying away from hairstyles requiring curlers, so I frequently see bonnet dryers in thrift stores. In Germany I bought two with the aim of comparing an older model from Krups and a newer model from Braun. Both have long cords and portable drying units so you can walk around while drying your 'do.

Krups Solitair 466

Pros: Looks. Detachable drying unit.

Cons: Loud and stinky.

Even I, the vintage fanatic, could not bear to use this Krups Solitair more than a couple times. The dryer's motor almost made me go deaf, and the plastic hood emitted smelly fumes when heated. Too bad, but this handsome unit is going back to the donation pile.

Still, here are some pictures to enjoy, since its packaging is lovely:

The Germans have a lovely name for soft bonnet dryers: "Schwebehaube," which means "floating hood."
This simple and inexpensive black nylon bonnet dryer hood attaches to your handheld hair dryer. The results I've gotten with it have been consistently good. The nylon fabric won't tear as easily as plastic, and it takes up little space, so it's a great travel accessory. You can buy one here for around $9.

For a little something different, I would like to post about my newest hobby: homebrewing. Initially my inspiration came from Sandor Elias Katz's eloquent and exhaustive book The Art of Fermentation. (When you see this book, the word "tome" comes to mind...). So far I've brewed various sweet wines, two types of mead, hard cider, and birch beer (nonalcoholic), and I've even started to make my own vinegar!

Some experiments have been successes, and some spectacular failures. Much has been written on brewing typical beers and wines, but here I want to introduce you to a more unusual beverage, podpiwek.

What is Podpiwek?

Podpiwek is a weak sour beer from Polish cuisine. It is related to kvass, a barely alcoholic, rye-based sour beer drunk during the hot summer months in the Ukraine and Russia. This Polish variation is sour like its eastern counterpart, but it includes some extra ingredients as well. The ready-made mix I used, made by the company Kujawski, includes grain, beetroot,

My understanding is that the sourness of kvass comes from the sourness of rye bread, which is leavened using sourdough starter, which imparts an acidic taste that is the byproduct of lactobacillus bacteria that help the bread rise along with yeast. My mixture contains citric acid to achieve this same effect.

Not much has been written on podpiwek in English, but if you're looking for more information, try these sites:

Ingredients and Equipment

If you're working with the packaged product like I was, you should have the following items ready:

• Podpiwek mix; mine contains beetroot, barley, chicory, sugar, hop, sodium biphosphorate, and citric acid.
• water
• a large pot for boiling the mixture in the water
• a funnel and cheesecloth/coffee filter
• a carboy or other suitable container for fermenting (if you don't mind plastic, you can use a clean soda bottle)
• a little plastic wrap
• a different container for storing
• a couple of raisins

Directions

The directions delightful box are written in Polish, but someone on a brewing forum came up with the following translation:

To make the full amount of 10 L, follow the information on the
package. This English translation is courtesy of the BeerSmith
Homebrewing Forum participant brewing-in-chandler:

Dissolve
1 packet [= 100 g] of Podpiwek in 10 liters of boiling water. Boil for
10 minutes. Sieve the liquid through a piece of cloth (filter paper
should be fine). Mix 5 grams of yeast (best fresh) in 1/2 glass of this
liquid. Then add this mixture to the rest of the liquid. Add 500-600
grams of sugar and stir until sugar is dissolved. Fill up the bottles
with the screw cap and put away in winter for 5 days (summer for 3
days). The first day should be in a warm place and the rest in a cooler
place.

I scaled this down for a 1.5 L batch, which means I used 15 g of the Podpiwek mixture, 75 g (brown) sugar, and 1/2 g yeast.
Here's how to brew your Podpiwek:

(1) Put the water in a pot

(2) Add the Podpiwek mixture

(3) Boil for 10 minutes

(4) Using a funnel and cheesecloth/coffee filter to filter the mixture so only the liquid remains. Compost the rest.

(5) Let cool to around 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit (ca. 24 to 27 degrees Celsius). Too hot and the yeast you're about to add will die.

(6) Add yeast. I used Red Star bread yeast, but you can also use a dedicated beer yeast if you prefer.
(7) Cover the bottle loosely with plastic wrap so nothing wanders in but so gasses can escape. Alternately you can try putting the lid on your container very loosely.
(8) Let sit for a day in a slightly warmer spot of your home.

Here's what my liquid looked like at this point:

(9 in summer) Let sit for 2 more days in a slightly cooler spot.
(9 in winter) Let sit for 4 more days in a slightly cooler spot

(10) (Optional) Pour into different bottles. At this point the dead and dormant yeast will have collected at the bottom of your fermenting vessel. I preferred a "cleaner" look for my finished product.

(11) Add a few raisins to the bottles, maybe 2-4 per bottle. (I added too many in the picture above.) This gives the remaining yeast a little something to snack on, which creates carbon dioxide for the carbonation process. Katz writes in his book The Art of Fermentation that you can tell kvass (and therefore Podpiwek) is carbonated by when the raisins start to float, but in my experience the raisins will bloat and rise even in uncarbonated kvass/podpiwek!

(12) Close and let carbonate. BE VERY CAREFUL if you are using glass bottles as they may explode if the pressure inside becomes too great. I prefer glass over plastic because of the potential for leaked chemicals with some plastics, but if this does not concern for you, it is easier to gauge carbonation in a plastic bottle. You can also put a portion in a small plastic bottle to help gauge how much pressure has built up.

(13) Place in your refrigerator after the desired level of carbonation has been reached.

(14) Enjoy cold.

What does it taste like?

Well, it tastes like a young, sour, weak, bready coffee-flavored beer. Some say kvass and podpiwek are acquired tastes. They're right. (Did you enjoy coffee or regular beer the first time you had them?) I could only drink the stuff chilled, which is how it is supposed to be served anyway. The first and second glasses I had were a struggle to get down. The third and fourth ones were better, and I could eventually grow to enjoy a cool glass on a hot summer day. This drink has only 1% to 2% alcohol by volume, so you cannot easily get drunk from it.

Oops!
To say things have been busy for me would be an understatement. I'm glad to be back and posting to the Hausfrau Journal despite the pressures of everyday life. Keeping connected with all you vintage-loving friends helps me through the tough times. (Do you feel the same?)

I'm so excited to share my most recent thrift shop find with you: a vintage Cornwall electric warming tray!

There's a Polish grocer not too far from me that sells all sorts of delightful specialty products, including sour cherries in jars, poppyseed filling for pastries, and various hard-to-find grains. They also carry Podpiwek, a mixture of dried beets, barley, chicory root, sugar, and hops.

Yes, I bought it because of the package. I'm a sucker for the retro
look, and this has definitely got that 1950s-does-16th-century aesthetic. (And if you love that look, check out this nifty vintage paper bag I found in an old hat!)

This is what the contents look like:

Since it has chicory root, I kind of assumed it was a replacement for coffee, so I brewed myself up a cup.

That was a mistake.

This stuff is actually used to make a weak, 3- to 5-day-old beer. Of course if I had noticed that the man on the front is holding a mug of frothing beer, I could have saved myself an unpleasant experience.Hausfrauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12744212518976378597noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1767771733979107650.post-47796042901873494592013-07-01T10:52:00.003-04:002013-07-01T11:47:39.797-04:00The Joy of Juice

Summer is a time of bounty, when the plants that spring from the earth share with us their bright and flavorful riches. Summer is also the time when my local grocer offers discounted fruits and vegetables, packaged at the peak of ripeness and needing to be sold immediately.

Yesterday morning I decided to finally do something with those many packages of strawberries and blueberries sitting in my refrigerator. Typically I make jam with such fruit, but lately I've been experimenting with homemade wines, so I decided to make juice from them using a Saftborn steam juicer I bought at a second-hand store last year for 10 Euros (!).

After washing and cleaning the fruit I threw all the berries into the perforated juicer basket, filled the bottom pan with water, assembled everything, and turned on the heat. I also happened to have a ripe papaya and mango sitting around, so at the last minute I threw in these as well. If you want to sweeten your juice, just sprinkle however much sugar you want to add right on top of the raw fruit.

The water comes to a boil after 10 minutes and the steam heats up and permeates the fruit. Around 10 minutes later the fruit begins release their juices, which drips down through a tube into a heat resistant container. I chose tempered glass—a large Pyrex mixing bowl.
At first the juice just trickles down, but the flow increases after a short while. It's a good idea to stir the fruit in the basket once or twice during the cooking process. A word of caution: make sure the bottom pan does not boil dry!
At the end the flow of juice will again reduce to a trickle. Tipping the juicer forward very slightly and carefully (it's full of boiling water and steaming hot fruit!) gets out that last bit of juice.

I don't blame you! In North America they're still available for purchase by various online vendors but otherwise tough to find. Here are two available from Lehman's, who I like supporting because they offer all sorts of neat, old-fashioned items for the household:

10 1/2 Quart Stainless Steel Steam Juice

8 1/4 Quart Stainless Steel Steam Juicer

Steam Juicers are much more common in Germany, where I've seen them in kitchen specialty stores and even department stores. You can also buy them online at amazon.de by entering the search term Dampfentsafter.

Just so you know, this method has the advantage of creating a nearly sterile juice that will last much longer in storage, but from a nutrition standpoint, cold pressing methods of creating juice will preserve more of the fruits' nutrients.

You've heard of Charlie Chaplin, Laurel & Hardy, and Buster Keaton, right?

How about Harold Lloyd?

Every summer I go on a silent movie binge, usually comedy, and usually Chaplin and Keaton. After working through all their films I moved on to Laurel and Hardy this summer. When that supply was exhausted, I came across a mention of Harold Lloyd, a comedy genius who in terms of output and financial success, superseded even Charlie Chaplin.

By all accounts Lloyd was a surprisingly normal and kindly fellow who happened to be one of the great masters of humor in his day. Today he's best known for Safety Last (1923), especially the famous scene in which he climbs to the top of a building and dangles precariously from the hands of a massive clock far above a bustling city.

(Can you make it through the final scene without squirming in your chair or pausing the film? I couldn't!)

Look closely and you'll note something odd with his right hand. Lloyd lost two fingers and part of the palm during an accident four years earlier when he was handed a real bomb instead of a fake prop during a photo shoot. In subsequent films he wore a stuffed glove to hide this disfigurement. And despite this handicap he amazingly did almost all his own stunts.

Don't you just love coming across an unopened package of an everyday household item made over half a century ago? Last week I stumbled upon this crisply folded, "brand new" white muslin sheet in its original sealed plastic bag by Erwin White Star.

Judging by the packaging, I would say it comes from the 50s. Apparently the brand no longer exists, but occasionally you'll see some linens from them on eBay or Etsy.
Someday I hope to open a little museum of everyday life from past decades to showcase ordinary objects like these. A gal can dream!

When's the last time you treated yourself to a new tube of lipstick? Many economists and social scientists have noticed a trend dating back to the Great Depression that during tough economic times, cosmetic sales tend to increase. The explanations for this noteworthy phenomenon range from insightful to outright fanciful, but generally it is believed women strapped for cash will splurge on a new shade for their lips rather than more expensive items like a new dress.

At almost $15 a tube, I wouldn't say Tangee is the cheapest lipstick around, but given the brand has been around for almost a century, its formula virtually unchanged during that time, I thought a vintage-loving gal like me should pick up a tube, regardless of the state of the economy.

Tangee's fame lies in its unusual color-changing characteristic, hence the motto "The Lipstick That Changes Color to Become Uniquely Your Own". In short, this vibrant orange gloss-like lipstick turns an elegant shade of red with a hint of purple within seconds of applying it to your lips.

How does this happen?
Well, the website Cosmetics and Skin explains how the synthetic dye eosin discovered in the late nineteenth century was added to Tangee and other lipsticks of the early twentieth century to create a new type of "indelible" color, that is, color that cannot be rubbed of the lips easily.

The mechanism responsible for this attribute was fundamentally different from how other lipsticks colored the lips. Traditional lipsticks contained pigments are already present and active even before the product touches the skin. In the case of Tangee and other "indelible" lipsticks, the eosin dye reacts with your skin's proteins to create a vibrant reddish color with the slightest hint of purple.

Thus Tangee technically falls under the category of lip stain as opposed to true lipstick. (Incidentally eosin is still used for staining tissue samples in laboratories....)

A smear of Tangee lipstick on my hand produces this pleasant reddish shade

So how does it become "Uniquely Your Own"? I'm not sure it does. Some say it reacts to the temperature or pH of your skin, but I've yet to see a scientific explanation for either of those claims. I'm not sure given the nature of eosin how this reaction could produce a different color on different people, unless you take into account the different underlying skin tones.

The Review

Tangee Lipstick comes in a black tube with a thick gold band, containing 0.13 oz. (3.7 grams) of the product. The logo with its unmistakeable 1920s/1930s font is emblazoned in gold on one side of the tube. The tube itself is nestled in an attractive black box decorated with the telltale logo flanked on either side with orange blossoms and golden tendrils.

When you remove the lid, you instantly notice its sweet perfume smell, reminiscent of roses and fragrances of bygone days. This is one of my favorite aspects of Tangee lipstick, although I understand our preference for scents can be an intensely personal thing.

The light but vibrant, almost neon tangerine color of the unused product provided the inspiration for its name.

Tangee resembles a gloss or balm. A smooth translucent coat is created by the wax, oil, and lanolin, with the color itself resulting from a dye that stains the proteins on the surface of your skin.

It goes on clear and remains this way for a second or two. Suddenly its shade will transform.

On me it creates to a reddish-pinkish color. My camera refused to capture the shade accurately, but the picture above is a fairly good approximation.

Unlike those old color-changing rings and hypercolor shirts, Tangee is not a "mood" lipstick. It does not alter its hue based on how hot or cold I'm feeling, or whether I'm enjoying acidic or basic foods for a meal. From one day to the next its color has remained consistent.

Right now Tangee is my go-to lipstick because the color stays even when the gloss itself wears off, this being a wonderful feature of lip stains. Even rubbing my lips won't remove the color. For that I need a decent cold cream or a good exfoliation.
You'll have to decide for yourself whether the price ($14.95) is reasonable. Browsing some old advertisements for Tangee, I discovered on page 51 of Volume 84 from the Druggist's Circular, (printed in 1940) that a tube of the original formula, called "natural Tangee lipstick", used to cost $0.89!

Tangee is among the earliest lipstick brand out there, dating back to the 1920s or 1930s. Although it disappeared from the market in the 60s, The Vermont Country Store acquired the rights to its name and unique formula, and currently they are the exclusive producers and distributors of the brand.
Also, Nedra Rhone of the Chicago Tribune wrote a piece entitled "Some experts suspicious of cosmetics claims" published in that newspaper's Lifestyles section on July 25, 2007 in which she casts a skeptical eye on the claims of some cosmetics and fragrance companies that their products create a unique hue or scent for each person. As far as lipstick and blush colors are concerned, the experts she interviewed seemed to think the variation in color between people has to do with the underlying skin tone and not with the products interacting with each person's body chemistry in a different way.

Last October I had a long conversation with a great aunt who is very dear to me. She worked as a hairdresser during the 60s and was generally a fashionable lady, even coming from a rather modest background. (I'll have to ask her more about her experience with hairdressing next time we chat.)

I enjoy hearing stories and memories from the elderly even more than I enjoy collecting items from past eras—which is a lot! Their tales are rich with wisdom, experience, and first-hand knowledge. Many have a very characteristic way of pronouncing words and telling stories that has disappeared with the younger generations.

But back to my great aunt.
During this phone call she shared with me memories of the time in the 50s when she was a teenager and young adult. She said back then women always wore a petticoat and a dress, never pants and shorts. The petticoats she wore were made of plain, white cotton. When necessary she would just wash and iron them, but doesn't remember starching them.

She also shared a fascinating tidbit with me, that when one petticoat got old, she would just layer another newer one on top. Often she would be wearing several at once to achieve the fullness she desired.

I find this technique to be fascinating and quite practical for the modern woman who wants to achieve a vintage or retro look. You can just layer a few skirts over each other, as long as they are each slightly shorter than the outermost skirt so they won't peak out from underneath.

As a little aside, how we think about previous decades is colored so heavily by the media—pictures, ads, television shows, radio programs—created at the time that have come down to us, but these more often than not misrepresent or distort everyday life, filtering out important if mundane experiences of people who lived through that era, experiences like the one my great aunt shared with me a half a year ago.

Back to petticoats. I see so much written about tulle petticoats (see this post by Vixen Vintage, for example), but so little about the plain, flat cotton style my aunt wore. So I went ahead and made my own using a simple circle skirt pattern and tutorial I found at Fickle Sense.

Here's how mine turned out:

Nothing to write home about, and since no one except my husband and me will ever see this little beauty, I made it more functional than aesthetically pleasing. I used the pattern that calls for a full 360 degree circle of fabric for the greatest fullness.

Much of the cotton fabric on the market today is too thin to make a good petticoat, in my opinion. The folds created by an older, more sturdy fabric will hold their shape better under the weight of a vintage skirt or dress, as in the example below:

I hate working with tulle, so for me it's worth it to pay the extra price for a vintage petticoat made of that fabric. At the beginning of the post I included a picture of one I purchased a couple months back. With some new elastic and assorted repairs, this delightful garment will be in shape and ready for some wear during the spring and summer months.
The sun is shining, birds are chirping, flowers are blooming. Yes, spring is in the air! (At least in this hemisphere...) The Hausfrau has come out of her winter hibernation and is dusting off the Hausfrau Journal to prepare it for some more frequent posts.

As a modest beginning effort, I am sharing with you a lovely vintage contact paper I encountered in an heirloom dresser. The contact paper probably comes from the 60s by the look of it (any differing opinions?), but the dresser likely dates back to well before the turn of the century.
This reminds me a bit of the radish contact paper I found and posted about a while back. (See my post on that here.) Have any of you dear readers encountered enchanting vintage contact paper?
A very happy Thanksgiving to all of you!

To make this holiday extra special, I pulled out one of my two vintage Dormeyer "Mixwell" stand mixers. As a peace offering for not having posted for an awfully long time, I am bringing you a multi-media presentation of a most delightful 1950s kitchen gadget!

The Mixwell 5020 is one in a series of standmixers produced by Dormeyer under this name ("Mixwell" probably being a play on "Maxwell"). Its sleak, rocket-like profile leans in the direction of the "atomic" vein of mid-century modern design. Unlike other Mixwell models from the time, this model lacks the detachable head which converts it from a stand mixer to a hand mixer.

As you can see, mine is covered in a lovely powder-pink paint that matches my kitchen tiles perfectly!

Very little information about this model seems to be available online. A few examples have been listed on Etsy and eBay in the last year, but I would surmise that, while not rare, a working Mixwell 5020 in as decent condition as mine is a rather rare occurrence.

As you can see in the photo below, the machine and beaters sit slightly off center from the base which holds the rotating platform where the bowl is placed. This characteristic is no design flaw, but rather a feature, as it leaves space in the bowl to maneuver the spatula or spoon without it getting mangled by the beaters.

This model came with two milky-white glass bowls of different size. The larger one is pictured in the last two photos directly above; the smaller bowl makes an appearance later on below.

Here the asymmetrical placement of the beaters with respect to the bowl is clearer to see. The notch in the bakelite handle and the beater-like socket is for the attachment of the juicer accessory.
Here I removed the quarter-sized metal piece that fits into the front to shield the socket for the grinder accessory, pictured below. The pin holds the grinder in place.
Amazingly enough, I got this mixer with its original wooden stamper designed for use with the grinder. How many of those do you think still exist?
These shots show the mechanism of the grinder, including the connection to the mixer in the one close-up. I wonder if this accessory originally came with more circular plates with holes of varying size?
Here's the juicer accessory (which I should have used to juice the oranges that went into my cranberry sauce below!). There is a possibility it belongs to my other mixer, and that a milky-white glass juicer sans metal post that I have lying around my home actually belongs to this mixer. I should figure all that out…
Regardless, it still fits this model, and the connection resembles that of the metal beaters to the underside of the mixer that I'm sure you're all familiar with from your own kitchen hand mixers and stand mixers.
And here's the complete setup I used to make the cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving dinner.

Now for the multi-media portion of this post! I took a video to show how the Mixwell 5020 functions with its grinder accessory. Unfortunately I couldn't properly capture all the moving parts of the mechanism inside because it was so dark in there. All told, the grinder worked okay, but not as well as a hand-cranked grinder that I also own. I think the rotation of the motor is transferred to the grinder in such a way that it moves rather slowly, hence the long wait before any pulp came out!

The mixer should have also been set to the highest setting ("juice-grind") from the very beginning.

Here's what I started out with:

Here's the consistency of what the grinder produced:

Add a little brown sugar, and it's all done!

Hope you all enjoyed meeting my precious Mixwell 5020. Out of curiosity, do any of you have vintage mixers that you use regularly or even occasionally? How would you compare them with modern gadgets? I've never had anything newer than 1970s, so I'd be curious to hear your opinion.Hausfrauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12744212518976378597noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1767771733979107650.post-26727893205596246622012-10-18T20:06:00.000-04:002012-10-18T20:06:00.924-04:00Pudding Packaging Pleasure

Once again a perfectly retro design on a pudding box has caught my eye in the grocery store. What was I to do? A few boxes of lemon and chocolate flavored My*T*Fine pudding leaped into my cart as I told myself that they would make a lovely dessert tonight.

This is not the first time something like this has happened, I will admit. (Click here for evidence.)
Do any of you find that most of the food packaging these days is either ho-hum boring or downright unsightly? I am unabashed about demanding a good product and pretty packaging, although given a choice between the two I'll always pick the former.

What, if any influence do product appearances have on you when you're grocery shopping? Do you splurge or impulse buy when faced with a pretty product?

When I first set foot in my new apartment, it instantly felt like home. Considering my husband picked out the place for us without my ever having seen it, I count myself exceedingly lucky! He chose a spacious yet cozy apartment that fills an entire floor of an early twentieth-century house.

And the best part?

Both the kitchen and bath were renovated in the 1950s and still include many details from this period! My husband had not said a word of this to me ahead of time, so discovering this for myself felt like winning the lottery, or at least a game of bingo.

Speaking of old friends, have I mentioned that we share our space with a bevy of tiny, colorful parrots? Family had been taking care of my small flock for a couple years during our stay in Europe, but now that we're back in North America (at least for the time being), they're living with us again.

The wild birds and monarch butterflies around me are in the midst of their long journey to find winter quarters. As I hear the formations of geese pass by with their distinctive honking and watch the groups of hawks slowly winding up into the sky on a warm pocket of air, I cannot help but draw a parallel with my own migration over such a great distance. Unlike the wild creatures, however, I hope not to make such moves a regular occurrence!

The Hausfrau is busy these days packing her things for a transatlantic move. Mercy, have I ever collected a boatload of vintage in recent months! My husband has made the smart tactical move of refraining from any comments on this topic, but I can tell he is not looking forward to lifting my suitcases....

And you can be sure I wept few tears when I had to entrust "die deutsche Post" with several carefully-packed boxes of one-of-a-kind dresses, linens, and kitchen gadgets. Will I ever see them again?
Inspired by my real-life change, I have decided to move my blog as well, away from the "blogspot" subdomain and to a dedicated URL, hausfraujournal.com. Since this entails updating a few posts and troubleshooting over a period of time, I'm expecting the transfer to be complete by the beginning of September.

Strawberry season has come and (largely) passed, and while you can still spot some of those heavenly red berries in the supermarket, the ubiquitous stands offering crates of them at discount prices have long disappeared.

One day in recent weeks I came home with more strawberries than I could put in my morning müsli, make into jam, or mash up for dessert, so I decided to adapt a chutney recipe I had lying around.

Hausfrau's Strawberry Chutney

2 cups of strawberries

1/4 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup honey

1 chopped apple

1/4 cup chopped onion

1/4 cup vinegar

1/2 teaspoon mustard seed

1/4 teaspoon allspice

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ginger

a spritz of lemon juice

Mix ingredients together and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and let simmer for about an hour or until the mixture becomes thick. Stir occasionally to prevent the chutney from burning to the bottom of the pan. Break up larger chunks by mashing the mixture ever so slightly, but do not make a homogenous pulp!

In the end you will be rewarded with a condiment that infuses your mouth with a bevvy of flavors: sweet, sour, spicy, tangy...
Pictures of everyday life from previous decades are utterly fascinating! Recently I ran across this cover from a 1967 issue of the Hamburger Kurs on display at the City Archive (Staatsarchiv) of Hamburg. Despite the slightly posed look of the woman, it captures the look and feel of an old-fashioned grocery store quite well, wouldn't you agree?Hausfrauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12744212518976378597noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1767771733979107650.post-81255404953903023992012-07-10T09:52:00.003-04:002012-07-10T09:52:55.039-04:001950s Children's Fashions from East Germany Part 2

Ready for another installment of darling children's clothing sketches from the 1950s? In April I posted some scans of a pattern booklet for kids' fashions produced in Erfurt, Germany around 60 years ago. Here are three more pages, front and back, for you to enjoy.
